Apple MacBook: Silver Beauty
Laptops have become one of those devices that is quickly going, and in some cases, already quickly gone from something that only techies or high level business people owned to something that even a poor college student finds a way to afford. This is simply that our lives become wrapped around these objects. Think of the cell phone. Ten to 15 years ago it was again only the techies or important business people that owned a cell phone. Now even elementary school kids have them so parents can be in constant contact when necessary.
We all have had the moment when we though we had misplaced our cell phone. Imagine losing your laptop. Not only is it a fairly significant expense, but think of the data you have on there. You probably keep a file with account numbers, you have your family pictures stored there, maybe music, movies. The list is a long one and an important one.
Therefore, make sure you follow the recommendations in this article on how to protect your laptop.
The convenience of the laptop is obvious. The computing power and versatility are equivalent to most desktop computers. With the advent of wi-fi we can be on the internet almost anywhere and be emailing, chatting, writing, surfing the net or shopping, all anywhere in the world.
Here are some daunting statistics for laptop loss from 2008:
Relevant Data Loss and Data Breach Statistics
- 1 in 10 ...laptop computers will be stolen within the first 12 months of purchase.
- 97% ...of lost and stolen notebooks are never recovered.
- 50% ...of organizations reported laptop theft.
- every 43 seconds ...a computer is reported stolen.
- every 3 days ... an information security breach is reported in the U.S.
- 82% ...of all PC's will be mobile devices by 2008, increasing 4 times as fast as PCs.
- 4,425 ...laptops reported left behind in Chicago taxis during a six month period.
- 56 million ...individuals affected by significant U.S. data security breaches, 2005.
- 1 billion ...PC users expected by 2010, up from 660-670 million today.
- 57% ...of corporate crimes are linked to stolen laptops. The latest crimes of espionage and sabotage are theft of executive personnel devices to access vital financial or personnel data.

How Much Does Laptop Loss Cost?:
That completely depends on how you look at it and who is doing the looking....
Personal Laptop:
The actual cost here is the cost of the laptop and if stolen while in the laptop bag (most often this is the case) then you've lost all your accessories as well. Not to mention possibly your wallet, MP3 player, passport (eek!). Obviously the actual cost of items and the intangible loss of items such as wallets, all your stored music, your passport, etc. are vastly different.
Business or Corporate Laptop:
Here the intangible costs can be astronomical. We have heard it on the news more than once and most of us have had it hit us directly with someone in the corporate world losing one or more laptops with critical customer data on it. The cost the hardware is only about $4000, the information carried upon it was could be worth millions..
Of course, to get to valuable proprietary information is not the reason for all laptop thefts some laptop thieves head try to quickly sell the laptop as-is. However, some data indicate that about 10 percent to 15 percent of those laptops are stolen by criminals intent on selling the data.
How to Protect Your Laptop:
With this in mind, what can we do as individuals to prevent our own personal loss?
Laptop Security Cables:
This is one of the lowest cost and one of the most effective deterrents to theft. As with most theft attempts, even a small amount of effort can make a huge difference. For this to work you need to make sure that your laptop is equipped with the appropriate feature to attach a cable. This is called a Universal Security Slot.
It is important to pay attention to what you are attaching the laptop and cable to. You sometimes have to think like a thief. If you really wanted to get that laptop could you? If you answer is yes, then you need to add more security. Consider looping the cable through a hole drilled in the lag of the desk. If you just loop it around the leg than all it takes is some one strong enough to lift the desk enough to slip the cable under the leg and whoosh! your laptop is gone...
Keep Your Laptop Out of Sight:
If you are not with your laptop then it should be secured in a locked drawer or in the possession of someone you trust (for the short trip to the restroom for example). Especially if you are in a public place like an airport, bookstore, or your favorite coffee shop. Never leave your bag alone.
Some laptop cases scream "I have a laptop in here!"
Try to use a carrying case for your laptop that may be a bit beat up or at least not look like it obviously contains a laptop. This may be difficult to do but can be a real effective way to have a thief move on to the next victim without bothering your precious laptop inside your ugly bag.
How to Protect Your Data:
I'm sure you've had moments when you couldn't locate a file that you knew you had stored on your laptop. The feeling of panic can be terrible until you find it. Imagine your hard drive failing (it happens!). You would lose all your important files - pictures, videos, everything.
Therefore, first and most important is external storage. External storage can be something as simple as a USB Flash Drive also known as a thumb drive (about the size of your thumb....) or a large external drive (about the size of an average hardcover book)
The type of external storage you select will depend on your needs. If you just keep basic files (i.e. "Word" documents or spreadsheets, etc) then a thumb drive could be enough (and they are very inexpensive) and can store up to 32 Gigabytes of data or if you are willing to pay a bit more they are larger storage capabilities available. If you plan on storing large files such as lots of photos and videos then you may need to step up in capacity with an external hard drive. They store up to 2 "Terabytes" (2000 Megabytes) of data. Product Description
Redesigned with a precision unibody enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum, the MacBook is thinner and lighter than its predecessor as well as stronger and more durable. But Apple didn't stop innovating with the body's design. The MacBook also includes a new 13.3-inch, LED-backlit glass display (instead of an LCD panel) and a glass trackpad that doesn't include a button (for larger tracking area) and features includes Apple's Multi-Touch technology.
The redesigned MacBook (see larger version).
Under the hood, the MacBook is powered by a powerful 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (with 3 MB L2 cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus), which runs applications faster and more efficiently as well as helps to reduce power requirements and save on battery life. And the MacBook features the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor, which delivers outstanding 3D game play with up to five times faster graphics performance than the previous generation.
It's pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, which enables easy backup of your most important data via Time Machine, a redesigned desktop that helps eliminate clutter. It also comes with the iLife '08 suite of applications--including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes--and the newest version of the fast-loading Safari web browser. Other hardware features include a 160 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (which can be upgraded to 4 GB), an 8x combo Superdrive (for burning dual-layer DVDs as well as CDs), built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), and Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections).
The New MacBook Design
Traditionally notebooks are made from multiple parts. With the new MacBook all of those parts with just one part--the breakthrough unibody enclosure. Every MacBook starts its life as a single block of aluminum, which is precisely machined into the basic unibody design. Another pass and the unibody takes shape. Another, and the integrated keyboard emerges. When you pick up a new MacBook you immediately notice the entire enclosure is thinner and lighter. And it feels strong and durable--perfect for life inside (and outside) your briefcase or backpack.
The standard aluminum electro-static trackpad has been replaced with a new glass Multi-Touch trackpad, which provides 40 percent more tracking area than before. Use two fingers to scroll up and down a page. Pinch to zoom in and out. Rotate an image with your fingertips. Swipe with three fingers to flip through your photo libraries. Swipe with four fingers to show your desktop, view all open windows, or switch applications. The entire trackpad surface is also a button, allowing you to both track and click virtually anywhere on the trackpad. And you can easily enable multiple virtual buttons in software, such as right-clicking.
The keyboard has also been improved, with the rigid aluminum keyboard webbing cut precisely to hold the keys, which are curved to perfectly fit fingers.
The 13.3-inch display is made of edge-to-edge, uninterrupted glass for a smooth, seamless surface and features LED backlighting for brilliant instant-on performance that uses up to 30 percent less energy than its predecessor. The ultra-thin displays provide crisp images and vivid colors which are ideal for viewing photos and movies
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which has a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With 3 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.
Video Processing & Output
The new MacBook uses a graphics processor that economizes space without sacrificing battery life. The NVIDIA GeForce 9400M is great for gaming, providing up to a 5x performance boost. Enjoy faster, smoother, more responsive gameplay as you power your way through the 3D environments of Quake, Call of Duty, and Spore. The 9400M graphics processor shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory.
The MacBook includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display. The Mini DisplayPort is ultra-compact at just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector, and is compatible with Apple's 24-inch Cinema Display. Adapters are also available for using VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays
Hard Drive and Memory
The 160 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 2 GB of PC3-8500 DDR3 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 4 GB.
Wireless Connectivity
The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.
Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight
Artfully placed in the glass display is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast.

Product Description
If you own a laptop, you know all about heat. Because today's notebooks rely on fast processors to do the job, they generate a lot of heat, with much of it landing directly in your lap. Some laptops can have a "normal" operating temperature as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit! Not only is that unsafe and uncomfortable, it can also wear your laptop down, cause it to crash unexpectedly, and reduce its overall life expectancy.

Belkin's Laptop Cooling Stand relies on a patented wave design and ergonomic features that will not only help protect your laptop by keeping it cool, but will also increase your comfort while you work. As part of Belkin's laptop@home line of accessories, the Laptop Cooling Stand is designed to help you to take full advantage of the benefits your laptop has to offer-- comfortably, economically, and stylistically.
Twice the Cooling Power, Half the Consumption
In contrast to most other laptop coolers that use two fans to suck warm air from the laptop's bottom, the Belkin's Laptop Cooling Stand relies on the natural flow of heat and air circulation to do the hard work and needs only one fan to do the trick. Instead of drawing the laptop heat down to push it out, the stand takes full advantage of natural air flow and heat's natural tendency to rise by pushing the hot air upward through the channel and away from your laptop.
The single high-capacity fan, powered by a USB port on your laptop, sits in the middle of the cooling stand, and hot air is channeled out to the left and right sides of your laptop. The result is heat dissipation that's equal to a two-fan solution but that uses less than half the power. And because the fan is USB-powered, you won't have any bulky batteries or adapters (which can also both add heat!) to weigh you down. You simply place your laptop on the stand, pull the USB cable out of the convenient storage compartment, and plug it into your computer. The stand will take care of the rest.
Computing in Comfort and Style
Measuring 12.6 x 11.6 x 1 inches (W x D x H), the Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand is designed for 15.4-inch or smaller laptops. To prevent slippage, the stand features rubber pads on the feet, and a small plastic panel folds out from the bottom of the stand that elevates the rear for better ergonomics. The gentle slope reduces wrist strain, and by raising the screen height, it also reduces neck strain that is common to laptop users.
Unlike the industrial gray and metallic appearance of other cooling stands, the Belkin Laptop Cooling Stand offers an attractive, gently sloped look that you'll be proud to show off as you work. The stand's thin profile means that you can easily slide the stand into your notebook bag as you travel from meeting to meeting, or café to café. And weighing a mere 22 ounces, you'll hardly notice that it's in your bag. More Details...

This 6.6-pound laptop is powered by the 2.0 GHz dual-core AMD Athlon X2 QL-62 processor, which provides easy multitasking capabilities, and it features 54g wireless networking (802.11b/g), enabling you to stay connected at coffeeshop and airport hotspots. Other features include a large 250 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), multi-format memory card reader, Intel GMA X4500MHD graphics with up to 797 MB of total available graphics memory, and pre-installed Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit, Service Pack 1). This PC also includes 60 days of Norton Internet Security 2009 (with the option to extend) for PC and identity protection when you email, bank and shop online.
The Basics
* Processor: AMD's Athlon X2 QL-62 dual-core processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.
This 2.0 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 3600 MHz and each core offers a 512 KB L2 cache--for a 1 MB total. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
* Hard Drive: The generous 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
* Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (PC2-6400, 1 x 2 GB, 2 x 1 GB) is a great start. This notebook has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
* DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD±RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
* Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard (with integrated numeric keypad) and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad.
Screen, Video & Audio
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 15.6-inch WXGA high-definition screen, which has a widescreen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels--a perfect 16:9 aspect ratio for watching DVD movies the way they were meant to be seen. Video is powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 8200M graphics card, which provides up to 895 MB of available RAM/video memory. Optimized for mobile computing, it provides long lasting performance even when watching high-definition videos or using graphically intense applications. PureVideo HD does the video decoding, instead of the power-hungry CPU, extending your battery life, reducing fan noise, and freeing the CPU for multitasking, so you never miss a scene. Various technologies such as PowerMizer SX or SmartDimmer help monitor your system to maximize performance or battery life.
The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. Note that it does not come with either a PC Card or ExpressCard slot. It includes the following basic set of connectivity options:
* 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
* 1 VGA monitor port
* 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
* RJ-45 port for 10/100 Ethernet connection
* 56K modem port (V.90)

You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect via Wi-Fi.
Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. HP 2133 Mini-Note PC Laptop - VIA C7-M ULV Processor 1.2GHz, 1GB DDR2, 120GB HD, 8.9" WXGA, Bluetooth, 802.11a/g/n, Built-in Webcam & Microphone, Windows XP Home
Product Description
Small but mighty, the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC gives you the freedom to be productive here, there, and everywhere. Its ideal for instructional use or general purpose business applications. Starting at 2.63 pounds and only 1.05 inches thin, the HP 2133 is designed to go where you go without weighing you down. Dont be fooled by its size; this small wonder keeps you ultra-productive. It comes equipped with the tools to help you conduct business efficiently on the go with features such as high-resolution, 8.9-inch diagonal WXGA display, 92% full-size QWERTY keyboard and touchpad. The simple, refined design and all-aluminum case makes it sleek, sturdy and lightweight. Features such as HP DuraKeys, magnesium alloy support structure, and HP 3D DriveGuard make a durable mini-note PC that can go the distance.
First, I want to forewarn you, the HP spec line says 802.11a/g/n. I don't feel that the 2133 comes with 802.11 N as an option.
Secondly, this is a confusing review. Do I like the HP2133 or not? Let's talk about the price that I purchased it for: $299.99 (+$27.69 S&H; I live in Alaska. Your S&H may be less) from TigerDirect. Why does the title say, "WAS amazing?" The day after I purchased this, TigerDirect took that sale price off their website and the Amazon market. I don't think you can get a NEW one from TigerDirect at ANY price. There is a refurb. for $279... If you trust refurbs it is still a GREAT deal.
Now here's what I got for $300 (there are about 5 different versions of the HP Mini 2133):
VIA C7-M, 1.2 GHz processor
1GB RAM
120GB HD
Windows XP Home (SP2)
60 Day trial of MS Office 2007 *Professional*
HP extra software (not all bloatware)
1.3M Pixel webcam
3 Cell battery (about 2 hours on a charge)
8.9" (22.7 cm) 1280 x 768 screen
All the rest that you expect on a 2133.
Here's what I like about the HP 2133: The keyboard may be the best, compared to any netbook I have placed my hands on, and I've played with an Acer Aspire One, Asus eee, MSI Wind, and a Dell Mini Note 9. The speakers are very good for a netbook; the webcam seems bright and of very good quality; the weight of 2.8 lbs. (1.3 kg) is just about perfect, even with the optional 6 cell battery; of course the netbook's size is what draws you to the netbook in the first place; the screen resolution at 1280 x 768 is beautiful; and did I mention the keyboard is great?
Okay, why did I rate this four stars (not five stars)? Don't I think that $300 for this netbook is a good price? No, it is not a good price, it is an AMAZING price... but you can't get it for this price anymore, unless you want a refurb. But that's not why I rated it four stars. The HP 2133 is almost perfect, except for three things: processor, battery life, and screen size.
Processor: The VIA C7-M, 1.2 GHz is decent, but I can tell that my daughter's Intel Atom 270 is just a tad bit snappier on some things. The VIA does fine with YouTube pages and a couple of test DVD's, but I've upgraded to 2GB of RAM and I think that has helped. It balks a bit with an external DVD, but it is not unusable. My guess is that you would not want to watch Blu-Ray disks on this, but since I don't have an external Blu-Ray player, I can't tell you for sure.
Battery life: 2 hours on the 3 cell battery is okay, but I felt I needed to purchase a 6 cell battery Super-Capacity Li-ion Battery For HP 2133 Mini-Note series replace KE948UT KX868AT KR922UT HSTNN-DB63 KX869AT KR939UT KR922UT series Ac Laptop Notebook Main Battery [ 4800mAh 6 Cells] for my occasional multi-stop trips to other parts of Alaska, or California. I think, though I haven't tested it, that I'll get about 4 hours on the 6 cell battery, for a combined 6 hours with the two batteries. But even at that, the battery life seems puny compared to the ASUS 1000HE at 9.5 hours on a single charge or even most new netbooks that last about 6 hours on one battery charge.
Screen size: Now don't get me wrong: I purchased the 2133 BECAUSE of the screen *resolution.* 1280 x 768 is about the highest resolution available in a netbook (most are 1024 x 600 these days), but why didn't HP put 10.1" (25.5 cm) screen on the lid? There definitely is enough space to put a 10 inch screen on the 2133; just shrink the speaker area a little bit. Compared to my daughter's 10.1" MSI Wind the icons are really small.
Actually, I can't figure out why any of the netbook makers are not making a 10 inch WXGA (1280x768 resolution) screens. The Gigabyte M912 (8.9" as well), Inventec SX3 (8.9" screen), Samsung NC20 (12" screen), and Dell Mini 12 (duh, 12" screen) all have WXGA resolution (in some cases 1280 x 800). But none have a 10" screen. Do I sound like Goldilocks testing the three bears netbooks? The 12" screen is too large (for a netbook), the 8.9" screen is too small (the icons are dinky), but the 10" screen is just right. According to some accounts, the HP 2140 is supposed to have 1366 x 768 resolution on a 10.1" screen model, but as I write this, I know of no one who has seen or reviewed this mystic beast. To make matters worse, the available resolution on the HP 2140 is 1024 x 576 (less than the standard 1024 x 600). Perhaps I should have waited, and purchased the HP 2140 with a higher resolution, but here's the bottom line: for $300 the HP 2133 is a steal! I am quite happy with what I have! More Details...
